City Walk Amsterdam Old Town with private guide

 

During this tour you will learn how the city of Amsterdam has developed over the centuries into the vibrant and colorful city it is today. Starting at the very beginning when a dam was built in the Amstel river and fishermen were overlooking the IJ waters. You will learn about merchants and sailors, explorers and criminals, Catholics and Protestants, craftsmen and famous artists like Rembrandt. We will meet important sites and hidden gems in this oldest part of town, including the Red Light district, the former Jewish quarter and the University area. Rembrandt will walk along with us for a while…We will finish on Dam Square, with the New Church, the Royal Palace and WWII Memorial.

City walk canal Belt and Jordaan with private guide

 

Amsterdam’s Canal Belt is unique in the world for its urban development and has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010. During this tour we will walk the old center west side to get into the Canal Belt area and from there we will enter the small streets of the former workers area the Jordaan, with its picturesque small streets, market squares, cafés and shops. In this area we also will visit a few typical courtyards and small canals. Near the Westerkerk, where Rembrandt was buried, we will find ourselves in front of the world famous ‘Achterhuis’ – the Secret Annex - nowadays known as the Anne Frank House. From there we will walk along the canals back to Dam square where our tour will end.

City walk Amsterdam Zuid - Vondelpark - muSeum quarter - with private guide

 

‘Plan Zuid’ is an urban development plan of the city of Amsterdam, designed by the famous architect Berlage and built in the style of the Amsterdam School movement. A prestigious project that should resolve the housing problems Amsterdam was facing around early 1900. Our walk will start in the Apollolaan area where you will see nice examples of the Amsterdam School style, including decorations in Art Deco style. In this residential area we will be confronted also with important WW II sites and memorials. We will walk to the famous Vondelpark, passing the chic neighborhood of Amsterdam ‘Oud Zuid’, with its eclectic houses and Art Nouveau decorations, trendy bars and high-end shops. From the Concertgebouw (Concert Hall) we will cross the large Museum square straight to the Rijksmuseum where you will find the masterpieces of Rembrandt and Vermeer. This is where the tour will end.
